The Cities of Winooski and Burlington will be performing structural repairs on the Winooski River Bridge (US Route 2/7 Bridge over the Winooski River) beginning on August 27, 2018. The goal of this project is to make minor repairs to some sections of sidewalk and to complete regular maintenance of the bridge railing on the eastern side of the bridge.
The duration of work is expected to last between two and three months. During this time, repairs to the bridge’s sidewalk (southwest end, Burlington downstream side) will occur in advance of the replacement of several railing panels on the east/upstream side of the bridge.
Temporary closures of traffic lanes and sidewalks will occur during construction and may impact users of the bridge. The closures are necessary to allow for construction vehicles and to protect public safety when the repairs are taking place. Signage will be posted to indicate changes to traffic patterns. The City of Burlington will have adjacent work at minimum upgrading and adding pedestrian signal heads at the same time that the bridge railing work is happening. Burlington’s contractor will be required to maintain an accessible path through and between Colchester Avenue, Barrett Street, and Riverside Avenue.
Pedestrians and sidewalk users: During construction, one sidewalk will be closed to users; one sidewalk will remain open at all times. The eastern/upstream sidewalk will be closed for the majority of construction until railing panel replacements are complete. Temporary closure of the pedestrian underpass on the Winooski side may occur during repair work of overhead railings.
Vehicle and traffic lane users: During the entire scope of the project, temporary lane closures will occur between 9 AM and 3 PM; these will primarily be the eastern lane adjacent to the railing during that work. Closures may result in traffic delays on Main Street (Winooski), Colchester Avenue, Riverside Avenue, Mill Street, and Barrett Street (Burlington).
The project is funded through a Town Highway Structures Grant awarded by the Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), and a local match from the Cities of Winooski and Burlington. Administrative support will be provided by VTrans and the Chittenden County Regional Planning Commission. McFarland Johnson is the design engineer and special inspector; Daniels Construction is the construction contractor.
