The City of Winooski is proud to announce a new leadership structure within the Winooski Fire Department.
John J. Audy Jr., who spent the last 3 years serving Winooski as Health Administrator, Zoning Administrator, and Fire Marshal, has accepted the role of Fire Chief. John’s 27 years of public safety experience provides a tremendous value to the City. His training and education includes a multitude of leadership and emergency response certifications from organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association, the Federal Emergency Management Association, and the Vermont Fire Service Training Council.
When asked about his new role as Fire Chief, he stated:
“It is an honor to receive this level of recognition and I’m proud to lead our firefighters and prevention staff in making Winooski a safe place to live. My goal as Fire Chief is to continue ensuring amazing service and dedication to the community while providing staff with the best possible training and resources.”
John Spittle, who has been with the Winooski Fire Department since 2001, has accepted the role of Battalion Chief. During his time with the department, John commanded a number of roles including Lieutenant, Captain, and Deputy Chief. Additionally, John assumed the role of part-time Fire Chief from July 2016 until present. His role during this time was instrumental in providing the department with excellent leadership. His expertise in fire safety includes over a decade of State and Federal certifications focused on leadership and emergency response. John’s move to Battalion Chief enables him to lead the Suppression Division, which directly oversees the operational functions of the entire department.
When asked about his new role as Battalion Chief, he stated:
“Serving the Winooski Fire Department has been incredibly rewarding. Overseeing our team and how they respond to emergency calls in real time has been an excellent experience. We’re always improving our operational functions – as Battalion Chief, I look forward to increasing the department’s capacity for excellence.”
Jessie Baker, Winooski’s City Manager, made this statement regarding the Fire Department:
“This change highlights the innovation of the Winooski Fire Department. With Chief Audy at the helm, Fire Prevention and Fire Suppression are organizationally aligned therefore providing the best services possible for Winooski residents and businesses. Further, the leadership both John Audy and John Spittle regularly demonstrate will ensure that our Public Safety Department remains strong and well-equipped to handle the hard work they do every day. I’m proud to have them take the lead in keeping our residents and businesses safe!”
